PM Manele Calls for Governance, Innovation, and Partnerships in Pacific Water Future
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has urged Pacific Island nations to strengthen governance, embrace innovation, and build regional partnerships to secure a sustainable water future.
Speaking at the opening of the 9th Pacific Water and Wastewater Conference and Expo in Honiara yesterday, Hon. Manele said the challenges facing the sector demand collective action and bold solutions.
“The future of Pacific water and wastewater services lies in good governance and innovation governance that is transparent, inclusive, and accountable; innovation in technologies from renewable power desalination to decentralized wastewater systems to smart data-driven monitoring and development,” he said.
He stressed that governments cannot deliver these solutions alone, calling for collaboration with the private sector, academia, regional agencies, and communities. He also highlighted the important role of young water professionals.
“You are our next generation of water champions. You bring fresh ideas, new energy, and bold solutions. We must support you with mentorship, opportunity, and trust,” he told participants.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of regional solidarity through the Pacific Water and Wastewater Association and development partners in amplifying Pacific voices on the global stage.
“When we act together, our small islands are not small voices. We are a powerful chorus calling for sustainable water futures,” Mr. Manele said.
He outlined three calls to action for delegates: commitment to national and regional investments in water services, collaboration across ministries and borders, and the rise of regional water champions to deliver sustainable solutions.
“Let us be bold. Let us be united. Water is life. Water is dignity. Water is resilience. And water is a shared future,” the Prime Minister declared.
The conference brings together Pacific water ministers, officials, professionals, and development partners to discuss challenges and innovations in the region’s water and wastewater sector.
It will conclude on Friday 29th August, 2025.
