Solomon Islands Journalists gain International exposure through Chinese media study tour

The Six member media team on study tour to Guangdong Province, China has gained invaluable exposure to modern newsroom technologies, new media, management practices and cross-border media perspectives.

As part of their programme, the delegation had the privilege of visiting two of Guangdong Province’s leading media institutions, the ‘ China Broadnet’  and the ‘ Shenzhen News Group’, where they received first-hand insights into how some of the world’s largest news organisations operate in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

At China Broadnet, the team toured state-of-the-art facilities that support the company’s extensive broadcast television, radio services, digital streaming platforms, and nationwide telecommunications network.

The Journalists observed how China Broadnet integrates traditional broadcasting with modern digital distribution of reliable information.

The delegation also explored the organisation’s advanced multimedia production studios, content-management systems, and innovation labs showcasing the future of radio-TV convergence.

Round table learning experience with Shenzhen News Group

The visit to Shenzhen News Group, one of China’s most influential media conglomerates, offered an equally enriching experience.

The Group’s operations span daily newspapers, specialised magazines, metropolitan news outlets, online news portals, mobile applications, and digital advertising services.

In China, the Solomon Islands journalists learned how the company blends print journalism with cutting-edge online media strategies to reach millions of readers across the region and beyond.

Throughout these engagements, the journalists interacted directly with senior executives, editors, producers, and digital-media strategists.

Discussions centred on the current challenges confronting traditional newspapers and radio stations, including declining print circulation, shifts in audience behaviour, and the pressure to adapt to fast-moving digital trends.

A session with the China Broadnet media

Executives shared innovative strategies on how legacy media organisations are reinventing themselves through multimedia integration, data-driven content production, digital subscriptions, short-video formats, and cross-platform storytelling approaches that have helped them remain competitive in an increasingly online-dominant environment.

This study tour represents a rare and transformative professional opportunity, one that broadens their global perspective, strengthens their technical knowledge, and deepens their understanding of modern media ecosystems.

Young George Maelagi of Solomon Star expressed, he is grateful for this international exposure.

“This is an experience I will truly cherish. The exposure gained here will greatly contribute to my personal development and that of our media industry back home.”
