PIF Permanent Representatives discuss Pacific Priorities with UNGA President in New York
On 22 October 2025, Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Members based in New York met with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Her Excellency (H.E) Ms. Annalena Baerbock.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the PIF Group to engage with the PGA on Pacific priorities during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Led by H.E. Jane Waetara in her capacity as PIF Chair in New York, the PIF Permanent Representatives presented four key priority areas for collaboration.
These included climate change and climate financing, peace and security, enhanced Pacific representation within the United Nations system, and reforms under the UN80 Initiative.
President Baerbock emphasized the interconnected nature of climate change, financing, and peace and security.
She acknowledged the leadership of Pacific Island countries, noting their frontline role in advocating for stronger global action on climate change and for more responsive and accessible climate financing models, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
She also highlighted the UN reform process as an initiative aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Organization, underscoring the continued importance of multilateralism.
In addition, President Baerbock referred to the upcoming selection process for the next United Nations Secretary-General, stressing the importance of gender parity and strict adherence to established UN principles.
Discussions further underscored the value of collective diplomacy through groupings such as the PIF, and the impact such coordination can have in advancing issues of critical importance to SIDS and Pacific Island countries.
These include addressing the impacts of climate change on Pacific communities and contributing meaningfully to global discussions, including providing inputs into the selection of the next UN Secretary-General.
