The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock , in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), launched the Agri-Business Incubation Centre (ABI) in Honiara yesterday.

The initiative marks a significant step forward in efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector and promote sustainable economic development in Solomon Islands.

It was made possible through the strong partnerships between the Solomon Islands Government, FAO, and other development partners.

The launch was held under the theme: “Unlocking Potentials for Sustainable MSME Investment in the Agribusiness Sector for Economic Growth.”

Minister for Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, Hon. Trevor Manemahaga, said the centre demonstrates the government’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a driver of socio-economic development.

“It is with both honour and privilege to officially launch the Agri-Business Incubation Hub in Honiara.”

“This initiative marks a significant step in our collective effort to transform agriculture into a vibrant source of economic growth, employment, and sustainable development,” Hon. Manemahaga said.

He said the new centre is more than just a launch but a signal of progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele and the GNUT government.

“We are turning promises into projects and policies into progress. This hub will directly address challenges such as youth unemployment, which is estimated at 38 percent in urban areas and even higher in rural communities.”

The Agri-Business Incubation Centre will support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture, with the goal of developing at least 90 agribusinesses within three years.

It will provide services such as business training, mentorship, advisory support, access to finance, MSME forums, climate adaptation guidance, and entrepreneurship competitions to foster innovation.

Minister Manemahaga added that the centre will also reach out to provinces to ensure inclusivity and regional development.

“Our vision is to unlock the potential of our local talents, resources, and innovations for the betterment of our nation’s socio-economic fabric,” he said.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Mr. Riley Mesepitu, thanked the Ministry of Agriculture  for its partnership in supporting farmers and small businesses across the country.

“The establishment of this Agribusiness Incubation Centre is a vital step toward nurturing local talent, encouraging entrepreneurial spirit, and developing a vibrant ecosystem that champions sustainable agriculture and agro-industry,” Mr. Mesepitu said.

He added that the chosen theme reflects government’s commitment to empowering youth and women, creating jobs, and improving livelihoods.

“I am confident this hub will become a centre of innovation and a catalyst for economic transformation.”

“Together, let us unlock the full potential of Solomon Islands’ agriculture sector for a brighter and more prosperous future,” the Permanent Secretary stated.

The launching ceremony was witnessed by government dignitaries, key stakeholders, development partners, and representatives from research, training, and education institutions, including the SINU School of Agriculture, Kastom Garden Association, financial institutions such as DBSI, as well as local MSMEs and farmer groups.
