Assuming the Chairmanship role of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Police Commissioner’s conference signifies a regional responsibility for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), says Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast.

Mr Prendergast made the statement at his weekly media conference in Honiara over the weekend.

Asked what the Chairmanship means for RSIPF, Mr Prendergast explains as follows:

“I think it means that we’re playing our role in the region. It gives us the opportunity to work for the remaining 12 months with the MSG Secretariat and again showed leadership on some of those very important issues for the region.”

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner said a new initiative agreed upon at the recent MSG Police Commissioner’s conference was the formation of a Police Women’s Network.

“Another issue that was decided is the formation of a new Police Women’s Network, which will be focused on getting the senior executive women police officers from regional countries together to provide advise to the Commissioners on how to improve participation by women in the police force and how to ensure that we get the best from the very valuable asset that they provide and also gives the Solomon Islands to show the lead on issues like domestic violence.”

The MSG Police Commissioner’s conference ended last Thursday.
