Commerce Minister Kuma: YECSI Annual Awards, a platform to sharpen skills and pursue Excellence

The Minister for Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, Hon. Harry Kuma has highlighted the importance of collaboration, perseverance, and continuous learning within the entrepreneurial community. He shared this message with members of the Young Entrepreneurs Council Solomon Islands (YECSI).

As the keynote speaker at this year’s YECSI Annual Awards Night, Minister Kuma encouraged young entrepreneurs to collaborate, not compete.

“Use the YECSI Awards as a platform to sharpen your entrepreneurial skills and strive for excellence,” he said.

Hon. Kuma also urged YECSI to continue promoting mentorship programs between award winners and aspiring entrepreneurs. He stressed the importance of sustainability to support YECSI’s long-term growth and lasting impact.

Minister Kuma noted the importance of the YECSI Awards, describing them as a platform that recognises young business leaders across various sectors who are creating jobs, encouraging innovation, and supporting socio-economic development.

He also highlighted that about 60% of the Solomon Islands’ population is under the age of 30, reaffirming the Government’s strong commitment to youth empowerment. He said the YECSI Annual Awards align closely with the Solomon Islands National Youth Policy (2017–2030), which aims for “Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Livelihoods – Leaving No One Behind.”

Minister Kuma further referenced government initiatives introduced after the 2024 Economic Roundtable, including youth entrepreneurship accelerator programs within the ministries of Tourism, Commerce, and Agriculture. He confirmed that the 2025 National Budget includes support for youth-led businesses, with continued backing planned for 2026.

This year’s Awards Night, held under the theme “Powering Progress – Young Entrepreneurs Shaping Tomorrow,” recognised 11 outstanding young entrepreneurs for their leadership, resilience, and innovation.

Reflecting on the theme, the Minister noted that the nation’s aspiration for “Joy, Peace, Progress and Prosperity” can be achieved when young people are empowered and given a central role in national development.

Minister Kuma added that the national government is committed to turning policies into action, with the support of YECSI, partners, and key stakeholders.

The Commerce Minister congratulated all participants in this year’s competition and commended them for their contributions toward building a brighter and more prosperous Solomon Islands.

Meanwhile, YECSI chairman, Limahl Totogi is convinced, YECSI is not just another organisation. It is a movement of young people shaping the future of Solomon Islands with creativity, courage and commitment.

Mr. Limahl expressed YECSI’s deep appreciation to all who contributed to the success of the Awards night.
