Solomon Islands is close to reaching an agreement on fresh fish export to Fiji.

Minister of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration William Marau said his ministry will help a local company build its capacity over time to meet Fiji’s monthly demand of 10 tonnes.

“Currently, we cannot meet the 10-tonne demand yet,” Mr Marau said. “The company can provide only six tonnes per month.”

Once a Memorandum of Understanding for the export is in effect, other local fishing companies that are capable of meeting the demand will be considered, he said.

Mr Marau said trade is an important policy directive for the current Government.
