By Mary Manelegua
The Australian High Commission Office in Honiara today handed over seven community-built waste disposal stations to the Mbokonavera 3 community in Central Honiara.
Funded by the Australian Government under the Mbokonavera 3 Waste Management Project, the project aims to improve waste management and promote a cleaner environment.
Each of the seven stations is equipped with six bins and a solar-powered streetlight.
During the handover event, Australian High Commission Counsellor, Ms. Heather Murphy, highlighted the significance of the facility for the Mbokonavera 3 community.
She emphasized that the project would assist the community in managing waste, reducing the strain on families and the environment, and contributing to a cleaner, healthier Honiara.
Ms. Murphy also noted that effective waste management is crucial for public health, disease prevention, and pollution reduction.
She added that the waste disposal stations represent community pride, promote clean streets and households, enhance climate resilience by protecting the ocean and environment, and create opportunities for the community.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Mbokonavera 3 community, Mr. Jamal Namo assured the Australian High Commission and stakeholders of the community’s commitment to maintaining the project.
He urged all community members to take responsibility for the stations, ensuring they are well-maintained and protected.
