Senior Taekwondo coach Junior Maetia is leading the national junior athlete, 17-year-old Tingsun Sia to Chuncheon  Korea this afternoon for the 2024 Junior World Taekwondo Championships, scheduled to take place from 1 to 6 October.

The championships is a significant event for young martial artists from around the globe, and Sia will be competing against some of the best talents.

Coach Maetia, who has a wealth of experience in training athletes, expressed his confidence in Sia’s abilities.

“Even though he didn’t compete in the recent Pacific Games, Sia remains committed to his training sessions and is focused on improving his skills,” Maetia told SIBC Sports in an interview.

He also stressed that Sia’s commitment to training has prepared him well for this international competition.

“I believe Tingsun has what it takes to perform at this level.”

When asked about his experience and exposure, Maetia said Sia has been competing in a number of competitions in Australia last year and this year.

“But this will be his first time to compete outside of Oceania,’’ he said.

Maetia said Sia is a dedicated athlete who has received strong support from his parents, who provided Taekwondo equipment for training at their home in East Honiara.

This encouragement has helped him improve his skills and stay focused on his goals.

Sia, for his part, shared his excitement about the opportunity.

“It’s a great honor to represent my country on such a big stage. I’ve worked hard for this, and I’m ready to give my best,” he said.

The young athlete hopes to not only compete but also learn from the experience and bring back valuable lessons.

“My goal for this World Championship is to compete hard and hopefully win a gold, silver, or bronze medal. But if I don’t reach that level, it’s okay because I still have many opportunities ahead,” Sia said.

SIBC Sports understands that the World Taekwondo funded the trip to the championship, making it possible for Sia and Coach Maetia to participate in this important event.
