The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC) and Solomon Power signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on a Solar Farm Project.

Prime Minister, Hon. Jeremiah Manele, Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Bradley Tovosia and board members of both parties were present during the signing at the Prime Minister’s Office today.

The project aims to establish a 5-Megawatt solar farm at SIBC’s transmission site in East Honiara, to enable the organisation to sell renewable energy to Solomon Power.

Speaking at the signing, SIBC Board Chairman, William Parairato says, the MOU represents the mutual interest in renewable energy of Solomon Power, the Government and people in the country.

“The common desire to move into an alternative renewable source has brought us together to ensure we come to common ground to progress this project for our people,” he emphasized.

Establishing the solar farm will enable the national broadcaster to generate revenue through a non-traditional method.

Meanwhile, Solomon Power Board Chairman, David Quan affirmed their support towards the endeavor.

“We look forward to further collaboration, and whatever support and exchanges we could give as we have a dedicated team of engineers, who have many years of experience on the solar energy front,” he said.

He added, success of the project will contribute to Solomon Power’s on-going efforts to enhance renewable energy and reduce electricity tariffs in the country.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manele acknowledged both parties for their efforts to their activities with national policies.

“This is how state-owned enterprises and statutory bodies should operate… This proposed project; therefore, is a step in the right direction for SIBC and SIEA in serving our people,” Manele explained.

He also assured that discussions with development partners to secure funding support is underway.

SIBC News understands, the MoU between the two parties is valid for six months upon signing.
