Two Solomon Islands maritime deck cadets have been selected among other Pacific Islands seafarers to undergo advanced training in Europe next month.

The training marked a major breakthrough for Solomon Islands’ maritime sector.

The training for Selister Kedrian Tamara and Augustine Sino Teisibwebwe is fully sponsored by a major European shipping company working with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Director of Solomon Islands Maritime College, Captain/Dr. Teorae Kabure, announced this achievement during the commemoration of the International Day of the Seafarers at the Maritime Campus in Ranadi, East Honiara recently.

“I am proud to announce that next month in July, two of our own Solomon Islands deck cadets who completed their basic maritime training course in 2024 have been selected among other Pacific Islands seafarers to undertake further training in Europe.

“This opportunity is fully sponsored by a major European shipping company working in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO),” he said.

Dr. Kabure doesn’t specify the university the two students will undertake their study and in which country in Europe.

Captain Kabure explained that after these students complete their 18-month sea time aboard large, foreign-going vessels, they will be able to proceed directly to the Class 3 Masters course, bypassing Class 6, 5, and 4 certifications at Solomon Islands Maritime College (SIMC).

This approved training scheme will help Solomon Islands bridge the significant gap between older and younger generations of Solomon Islands seafarers.
