February 1st is the day the Honiara City Council (HCC) will impose its Seven Metre By-law.

Speaking today in a Talkback show on the National Broadcaster, Honiara City Mayor Alfrence Fatai says the ordinance is the
continuation of the HCC advocacy plan.

“This ordinance is the continuation of the HCC advocacy plan but the difference now is that we will resolve to make on-the-spot fines and arrest violators of the ordinance.”

The Mayor also called on the residents of Honiara City to keep their surroundings clean, adding they will make arrests if people break the ordinance.

He says a fine of $10,000  will be imposed on offenders.

“I call on everybody for your cooperation. The general public, the business houses and property owners to clean up our surroundings. You will not be able to blame us for not informing you that we will conduct arrests and prosecution to make an example to show that we are serious by doing this. The business houses and property owners under the HCC Litter Ordinance will fine up to $10,000 if they fail to keep their surrounding clean. Individuals will be fined up to $1,000 for littering or both can face imprisonment.”
