Major upgrades in the pipeline as Honiara preps for 2023 Pacific Games

Upgrades are planned for the airport and other infrastructure before the 2023 Pacific Games.

The Government plans to upgrade major infrastructure in Honiara before the city hosts the 2023 Pacific Games.

Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Jimmy Nuake saidĀ the upgrades include the second phase of the Kukum Highway project, which will complement the current roadwork in Honiara.

RenovationsĀ are also planned for the Henderson International Airport.

“Ideally, that is what we suggested to JICA, the Japanese Government, that we want these projects to be done before the 2023 games so that we’re well prepared in terms of our roads and transport infrastructure from the airport to the city,” Mr Nuake said.

He said the Japanese Government indicated that it is willing to consider the request.

The Solomon Islands Government has secured funding for upgrades to the Henderson airport, and the submission for the second phase of the Kukum Highway project was recently made through the JICA office.
