New national park.

SPREP Administrative office building in progress.

Preparations are underway for the opening of a new ‘nature park’ at Barana Village in Northwest Guadalcanal next year.

The new park will be funded by the ‘Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme’ in collaboration with landowning tribes of Barana.

Barana SPREP Coordination Committee Vice Chairlady, Ms Melinda Kii said the proposed park is a five year phase program intended to develop a national park close to Honiara City.

Ms Kii said the project will see major reforestations, beautification and training programs carried out for the people of Barana.

She added, as part of the initiative, people in the area will receive water tanks, gardening tools and employment opportunities.

“SPREP has identified this area as a potential park close to Honiara, and consultations with the people here started two years ago,” she said.

“We have an MOU drafted, and we’ll be signing it soon.”
