Current logging activities on Marau Sound, East Guadalcanal has prompted concern for marine conservation areas there.

A Philip Hauraha told SIBC News, there are two logging companies currently operating in Ward 12, Marau Sound.

Mr Hauraha says their log ponds are along the coastal areas, and their continuous activities are likely to affect Fishery Conservation
areas.

He urged the Ministries of Environment and Fisheries to conduct an environmental impact assessment on the area.

“I am calling on the responsible authority especially the Ministry of Environment to go to Marau and conduct an assessment of the logging and the Ministry of Fisheries should also do the same by visiting the marine conservation areas at Marau and try to formulate a report so that we may assess the impacts of the logging activities on what I am trying to convey here.”
