SOLOMON’s FUTURE MUST BE CAREFULLY PLANNED: PM SOGAVARE

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare says the future of Solomon Islands must be carefully planned to ensure that the country can sustain and protect the ocean.

The Prime Minister made the statement in Honiara yesterday when he officially opened the inaugural Solomon Islands Government Ocean Summit.

The summit brought together government ministers, permanent secretaries and other relevant government officials to discuss the significance of the role of the ocean in Solomon Islands development.

The outcome will be translated into an integrated Ocean Resource Management Plan which will be part of the DCC Government’s 20-Year National Development Plan.

Speaking yesterday, the Prime Minister said Solomon Islands is rich in marine resources and ocean with its plants and creatures are part of its culture and heritage.

He said with such marine abundance and strong cultural connections to the sea with its plants and creatures, the future must be carefully planned to ensure that the ocean is sustained and protected.

He said if the ocean is ignored in the country’s development planning and Solomon Islands will fail to secure and improve upon the benefits derived from it.
