34 new cases of HIV recorded in the country
A total of 34 new cases of HIV has been recorded in the country this year, marking a significant increase from the 8 cases previously reported in 2024.
Minister of Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Paul Bosawai, announced the figures this morning during his address to mark World AIDS Day.
“We recorded 34 new cases this year, bringing the total to 79 cases. Of these, 25 are male and 9 are female. The total number of positive clients is now 48, three of whom are not on treatment,” Dr. Bosawai explained.
He encouraged individuals who have tested positive but are not yet on treatment to seek medical care at their nearest health facilities.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Paul Bosawai.
“When you receive treatment, the viral load of HIV will drop, and you can enjoy a long life. So I encourage the three who are not on treatment to please come forward and access treatment. Do not be afraid, as you are only causing more harm to yourself and to others.”
Recently, neighboring countries such as Fiji and Papua New Guinea also reported rising HIV cases. Last year, the Fiji Government declared an HIV outbreak following a surge in infections.
Minister Bosawai stated that these developments pose a risk to the country due to frequent regional travel.
He assured the public that the Ministry is working to address the increase in cases.
“The Ministry of Health, through the National HIV, STI and Viral Hepatitis Programme and its partners, is committed to addressing the surge in HIV cases. We are working towards updating and developing HIV policies, strategies, and guidelines to curb the situation in our beloved country.”
“We need to strengthen our prevention measures, testing and screening, treatment strategies, and the decentralisation of these services across the country,” Minister Bosawai said.
