TOBACCO WORLD’s DEADLIEST PREVENTABLE KILLER: Dr GEOFFREY

Director of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Dr Geoffrey Kenilorea has said tobacco is the world’s deadliest preventable killer.

Dr Kenilorea made the comment yesterday in a radio talk-back show at SIBC to commemorate the World No Tobacco Day, saying tobacco kills six million people every year.

“Tobacco is the world’s deadliest preventable killer. We say preventable because we can prevent deaths secondary to tobacco and it kills six million people every year and of this six million, 600,000 of them were second-hand smokers of this total 130,000 of them were children.”

The theme for this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Elimination of Illicit Trade and Tobacco Products.”
