Solomon Islands boosts Maritime Safety with Enhanced Flag Early Warning System for people of Temotu Province
Small craft operators and travellers in Temotu province are set to significantly enhance the safety of their inter-island maritime travel with the installation of the Flag Early Warning System (FEWS) for small crafts in Lata last week.
This vital initiative, supported by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and Climate Risks Early Warning System (CREWS) and implemented by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS), aims to provide timely and accurate information about sea conditions, thereby reducing the risks associated with small boat travel in the province.
Speaking during a cutesy call to his office by SIMS staff, premier of Temotu province Hon. Stanley Tehi, MPA, expressed his profound appreciation to the government for taking this very important lifesaving initiative to Temotu province.
“Our islands are separated by large bodies of water, and so our people rely heavily on small boats for daily life, including transportation, trade, and access to essential services for many communities”
He said the unpredictable and severe weather patterns, exacerbated by climate change, have led to numerous incidents of small boats capsizing, resulting in loss of life and property because local skippers rely solely on experience.
“And so the installation of this Flag Early Warning System will greatly enhance the safety of sea travel for our people through this systematic approach to timely weather warnings” he concluded

FEWS involves the installation of distinct flag signals at key coastal locations and boat landing areas.
The flags serve as visual indicators of current sea conditions, based on real-time meteorological data and strong wind forecasts provided by SIMS.
The meanings of the flags are clear and easy to understand:
- Green Flag: Indicates that it is safe to travel, with calm and slight sea conditions.
- Orange Flag: Advises caution, signaling moderate to rough seas.
- Red Flag: Means it is dangerous to travel, indicating rough and very rough sea conditions.
The operation of FEWS is a collaborative effort involving key stakeholders such as SIMS, Solomon Islands Maritime Authority, National Disaster Management Office, Provincial
Government, various NGOs, and other Government Agencies and Sectors. Funding is provided by WMO and CREWS.
The Flag Early Warning System represents a practical and effective solution to enhance maritime safety, reduce risks associated with rough sea conditions, and contribute significantly to the overall well-being of the island communities in the Solomon Islands.
