Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has re-affirmed the Government’s commitment to support and strengthen gender equality through the elimination of gender-based violence and child abuse.

Speaking at the official launching of the Family Protection Act (FPA) Friday last week, Mr Sogavare said domestic violence is a human rights problem that affects the personal security of persons and the right to live full lives free from oppression.

Recent studies have shown that Solomon Islands has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the world where women and girls suffer the most from domestic violence.

The Government Communication Department reports, Government is committed to strengthening the National Judicial and Legal System and Apparatus in the Country to effectively support the implementation of the FPA.

It is anticipated that Government will take up the Bill of Sexual Offences and the Child and Family Welfare Bill during the upcoming sitting of Parliament.

Prime Minister Sogavare believes, the enforcement of these laws guarantees a high success rate in the implementation of the Family Protection Act.
