The Government should start to seriously consider resettlement issues, says the Leader of Independent Dr. Derek Sikua.

The North East Guadalcanal MP made the comment in Parliament during his contribution on the Lands and Titles Amendment Bill 2016 which was later passed.

“The Government should start to think seriously about resettlement, the resettlement of our people due to over population, resettlement of our people due to the effects of natural disasters, resettlement of our people due to climate change and sea level rise because in our history Sir these things have happened.”

He added as leaders they need to be proactive about these issues, saying the Lands and Titles Amendment 2016 will hopefully create an opportunity to allow the Commissioner of Lands to deal with the issue.

“I think this Bill will create the opportunity, Sir, to allow the Commissioner to deal with issues that go beyond just roads, schools and clinics. I hope the”Public Purpose” here Mr. Speaker goes for resettlement of our people as well and Mr. Speaker this issue is very real for our people.”
