The Honiara Council will start its campaign soon to educate residents close to the Mataniko river to stop littering the river.

Speaking to SIBC News City Clerk Charles Kelly says the role of the city council in the proposed major clean up of the Mataniko river is to create awareness for the people.

He says the cleaning up of the Mataniko river is one of the Council’s dream.

“Our campaign this year, in a big way, is we are trying to tell people that please do not throw rubbish into the river and also we are starting to ask them to move toilets away from the river banks, because other agencies are also willing through showing support to keep the river clean. So right now the river is over polluted and dirty and anywhere in the world a river in the midst of the city is the people’s livelihood, a place they can enjoy”.

However, Mr Kelly says the Council is willing to support responsible authorities who will be involved in the major clean up of the river.
