Honiara schools permitted to call of classes as parliament set to debate MONC

All schools in Honiara will close for classes tomorrow Tuesday 6 May, 2025 as parliament will resume to debate on the motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development made the decision following requests from Honiara-based Education Provider Officers.

The decision is to ensure the safety of students and staff during tomorrow’s parliament session.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rodie said given the current political situation in the country, schools have been given permission to suspend classes should they wish to.

He said such situations are unpredictable, so it is safer for students to remain at home.

“We are giving Education providers the final decision, so it looks like all the schools within Honiara will be closed.”

He said the reason for the closure is that you cannot predict what will happen, so it’s safe for students to stay away from school tomorrow.

“They can compensate for the day that they miss classes on another day or in the future,” Rodie said.

Rodie said should school management, in consultation with their respective Education Providers, decide to close classes tomorrow, they are permitted to do so.
