Speaker of the National Parliament, Ajilon Jasper Nasiu has said many Solomon Islanders do not understand and appreciate the roles and functions of Parliament.

Mr. Nasiu made the statement in his remarks to welcome 50 youth participants of the 2016 National Youth Parliament in Honiara.

He says a major challenge for Solomon Islands now is many do not understand and appreciate the roles and functions of Parliament.

“One of the major challenges of the Solomon Islands in this 21st Century is that many do not understand and appreciate the roles and functions of Parliament and furthermore, many still think that Parliament is the ruling government, which is not true. As the National Constitution outlines well, that there is a separation of powers on the three arms of the State.

He said the National Youth Parliament is an event designed to engage young citizens in appreciating and understanding the roles and functions of Parliament.

The Speaker said it also aims to expose young men and women to leadership roles, provide public speaking experiences and other skills.

The theme for this year’s National Youth Parliament is: “Empowering Youths in Employment and Decision-Making.”
