Music rights workshop in Honiara

A music rights workshop is currently underway in Honiara.

The work aims to educate participants on copyright and intellectual property, marking a significant step in promoting the rights of local musicians.

Director of Culture Denis Marita said the workshop focused on the establishment of the nation’s first Collecting Management Organization.

“This workshop is more than just a training event; it is the beginning of our creative history.

“The establishment of the Solomon Islands Performing Rights Organization (SPRO) will ensure our musicians receive the recognition and financial benefits they deserve,” Marita said.

He also admitted that limited government support remains a challenge faced by the music sector.

However, he acknowledged the contributions of international partners, including UNESCO and the Fiji Performing Rights Association, in facilitating this critical development.

“The journey has not been easy, but today we take the first real steps towards turning our vision into reality,” he stated.

The workshop not only focuses on fundamental copyright issues but also to foster collaboration among regional organizations.

The two day workshop concludes Tuesday 20 May 2025 ahead of the launching of the Solomon Islands Performing Rights Organization on Wednesday 21 May 2025.
