The Solomon Islands National Museum under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has today launched the International Museum Day and a three day Cultural Film Show Program.

ThE 2015 International Museum Day theme is “Museum for a Sustainable Society”.

Speaking at the event this morning, Minister for Culture and Tourism Bartholomew Parapolo said the International Museum celebrations raises awareness about culture and heritage institutions like museum, archives and libraries – and the roles they play in developing societies.

“The theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “Museum for a Sustainable Society”. The theme itself highlights the concept of sustainability and the role of museums in raising public awareness about the needs for a society that is less wasteful, more cooperative and use resources in a way that respect living systems.”

The Culture and Tourism Minister also highlighted the Government’s commitment to developing the culture sector of Solomon Islands.

“The DCC Government is committed and supportive of the culture sector in Solomon Islands. As stated, we strongly believe that culture and creative industry have the potential to impact our local economy and the daily lives of our people. A properly enhanced and promoted culture and creative industry may provide an alternative model of development to the extractive sector like mining and logging.”
