Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele is set to face a vote of no confidence in Parliament on Monday, December 16, 2024.

Clerk to the National Parliament, Jefferson Hallu confirmed to SIBC news.

Mr Hallu said the motion was formally put on notice on Thursday, December 5th.

I put it on notice last Thursday, so by Monday, December 16th, it’s next week, and it’s most likely to be held on that day,” he said.

Hallu explained that the motion goes to the heart of the principles on which parliamentary democracy is premised – majority rule.

It’s a mechanism to check whether the government has the confidence of the House as the ruling government or not.”

The vote could potentially create political and economic uncertainty, as Hallu noted that the government’s stability may be challenged, especially in the business and public sectors.

Despite the upcoming motion of no confidence vote, the government intends to continue with the budget discussions for recurrent expenditure, with a consensus among party groups to push through the budget before addressing the no-confidence motion.

Hallu said that the motion will be dealt with on Monday whether the budget is passed or not.

SIBC understands the challenge has been brought by Member of Parliament for Central Honiara Constituency, Gordon Darcy Lilo, and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
