PS Dr. Rodie emphasize the critical role of teachers in enhancing student learning

A two-day National Stakeholder Reflection and Co-Creation workshop towards strengthening the nation’s education system with a focus on developing the Teachers Professional Development model was successfully completed on Thursday, 5 March 2026 at Honiara Hotel.

Participants during the workshop

The workshop brought together 46 key stakeholders involving education providers, development partners, school principals, and officers from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) to reflect on how best to support educators in delivering quality learning to all children in the Solomon Islands.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Permanent Secretary Dr. Franco Rodie emphasized the critical role of teacher effectiveness in enhancing student learning in the country.

He said over the past few years MEHRD has achieved positive developments in its education system in alignment with the National Education Action Plan (2022-2026), the Education Strategy Framework 2016-2030 and the Solomon Islands Partnership Compact 2023-2027.

He said these frameworks present challenges for the Ministry and key stakeholders to rethink and reflect on the support for teaching and learning.

“Teacher professional development must be a permanent and structured aspect of the education system, rather than a one-off event,” Dr. Franco said.

He noted the findings from a comprehensive assessment across multiple schools, urging the participants to reflect on their own professional development experiences and the support needed for teachers to thrive.

He concludes with a call for collective commitment to invest in teachers to transform education in the Solomon Islands.

Supported by the Global Partnership for Education System Transformation Grant and implemented alongside UNICEF, this initiative aims to shift teacher professional development from occasional events into an embedded, continuous, and contextually relevant system.
