Red Cross Express Appreciation for Volunteers
On December 5th, the world celebrated Volunteer Day, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of volunteers to global peace and sustainable development.
In the Solomon Islands, the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society (SIRCS) heavily relies on volunteers to reach the rural population.
Ms. Jean Uwesi, Youth and Volunteer Officer at SIRCS, emphasized the respect and appreciation they have for their volunteers.
She highlighted their crucial role during events like the Pacific Games, where volunteers ensured safety and provided first aid services.
“The recent Pacific Games event, the SI Red Cross Society have around a hundred volunteer workers who are involved in making sure all people are safe. They provide first aid services at the game’s venue,” Jean told SIBC News.
She added that in the current bad weather and cyclone season, volunteers are instrumental in responding to disasters.
Ms. Jean expressed that the International Volunteer Day is a moment to reflect on and appreciate the sacrifices made by volunteers worldwide.
The theme for this year’s Volunteer Day is, ‘the power of collective action: if everyone did’.
