The Solomon Islands are in front 2-1

The Solomon Islands will face New Zealand in the Oceania final of the World Cup qualifiers after beating Papua New Guinea 2-1 in Port Moresby tonight.

After a number of chances in the seconds half, the score remained at the half time score of 2-1.

It means the Solomons will now go through to the two-leg final against New Zealand in late August and early September respectively.

The winner of that will progress to the Intercontinental Play-Off with the fifth-placed nation from South AmericaSXS, and then the World Cup awaits.

In the game tonight, Jerry Donga slotted through a goal in stoppage time at the end of the first half to put Solomon Islands in front at half time.

Donga was on his on his own with just the goal keeper to beat after being put through with a through ball by Totori late in the half.

He did so and put Solomon Islands 2-1 in front after Henry Fa’arodo drew the Solomon Islands level at the penalty spot.

It came after Felix Komolong was sent to the stands early with a red card after he handled the ball in front of goal.

Raymond Gunemba put the hosts in front at the 18 minute mark. But that is all history now.
