The Secretary General of the United Liberation Movement of West Papua (ULMWP), Octovianus Mote has said the decision to defer West Papua’s application to become full members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group was disappointing.

Speaking to the media last Friday Mr Mote described the Leader’s decision as a very emotional day for West Papuans.

“It was really an emotional day, you know, we were really hoping that we would be full members because not only Papuans are united under the Liberation movement as we’ve been demonstrating it for a year and a half that we are united under one leadership.”

He, however, added the fight for West Papua’s freedom is still not over, saying Indonesia has not defeated West Papua.

“It is important to inform people that Indonesia has not defeated us because of this deferral, it’s just a technical situation.”

MSG Leaders have ‘deferred’ deliberations on the United Liberation Movement for West Papua’s application for full membership, a decision attributed to legal wording issues.
