A workshop, which aims to support women fully participate in elections and political governance has started in Honiara today.

Participants from all around Solomon Islands are currently attending the workshop.

Speaking to SIBC News today Audrey Manu, National Coordinator for Advancing Gender, Justice Program, for the UN Women Office in Solomon Islands says most of the participants are aspiring women candidates, women leaders and male champions.

“The workshop is about trying to support women to be strong regarding their participation in terms of election and also in political governance and representation in political life within any democratic institution, which is the main aim of the workshop. We know that Solomon Island has one of the lowest representation of women in decision making bodies.”

Mrs Manu also calls on everyone to support women leaders who are aspiring to contest the 2014 national elections.

“It’s good to have our people out there supporting our women leaders who are thinking of contesting in 2014, and they need your support to work in partnership our male colleagues on the ground.”

The workshop ends on Friday.
