Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, Ethel Sigimanu says family violence cannot be addressed without taking due consideration on the gender inequalities faced by women and girls in the country.

Mrs Sigimanu made the comment at the opening of the three days Channels of hope Gender, Church Partnership Conference this week in Honiara.

She emphasises, now that Solomon Islands has a Family Protection Act, silence is shameful.

“For such a time as this, silence is despicable. It is a shameful thing to do nothing, I cannot emphasise that enough. For such a time as this, we need each other to speak out and to speak up so that the peace we all want to see and experience in our homes is a kind of peace that leaves lasting memories in our lives.”
