The 16th edition OFC U-17 Championship has seen Vanuatu defeated one of their direct rivals, Solomon Islands 2-1 yesterday.

The Group B Melanesian clash displayed classic football rivalry.

Vanuatu took an early advantage for a place in the semi-finals through their striker, Sylvain Worworbu, who opened the score sheet after only four minutes of play.

Before the end of the first half, Solomon Islands hit back, by way of a striker Larry Zama who equalised in the 41st minute to end the first half one-all draw.

Solomon Islands had opportunities to score and take the lead in the second spell but could not secure a goal.

However, a penalty converted by Ronaldo Wilkins in the 61st minute gave Vanuatu a small advantage they hung on to, until the end.

Solomon Islands coach Jacob Moli is disappointed by the result but pleased with his players’ attitudes.
