11th Parliament first meeting on Wednesday

The first meeting of the 11th Parliament is set for Wednesday this week, confirms the Office of the Clerk to the National Parliament.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare sets the date for the first meeting.

Acting Clerk to Parliament, David Kusilifu told SIBC News, first on the agenda will be an Oath taking session for all elected Members of Parliament.

“The first agenda for this Wednesday’s sitting will see members of parliament taking their oaths and then after that we will go straight into the election of the Speaker. Once that is concluded, the Speaker-elect will conduct the election of the Deputy Speaker, so that’s the process for this Wednesday’s sittting”.

He adds, nominations for the Speaker’s post which opened last Friday will close tomorrow 4pm.

“And so nominations have opened last Friday and will close tomorrow at 4pm and the nominations have opened for members of parliament to nominate individuals for the Speaker’s position and for the deputy speaker. In terms of the Speaker’s position any Solomon Islands citizen can be a candidate for the position except for the deputy speaker where candidates will only be chosen amoung members of parliament”.
