Police are again calling on people to take extra precaution when travelling at sea as bad weather continues in the country.

A Strong weather warning has been issued for Guadalcanal, Renbel, Temotu , Makira and the southern waters of Western Province.

Late last month a young man lost his life while another is still missing after a a boat overloaded with twenty- two passengers sank near Bungana Island, Central Province after experiencing mechanical problems.

Supervising Police Commissioner Ms Juanita Matanga says small boat users and passengers must take precautionary measures such as informing relatives about their trip, avoid overloading, avoid taking alcohol while travelling on the boat, checking the weather before travelling, and ensuring engines are in good condition.

Ms Matanga said people should also listen out for weather advises on the radio.

” I know life jackets are quite a challenge, but I know there are other things that we can take to ensure our safety at sea,” she said.

” People should take extra water, food and medical kits, so take something that will keep you safe in times of emergency.”
