Budget constraints will prevent the construction of a new office complex for the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs this year.

Permanent Secretary Dr Cedric Alependava said the High Court has secured the fenced area opposite the Coral Sea resort for the office complex.

But he said the $500,000 development budget allocated to the ministry this year will cover only the cost of fencing and other groundwork.

Dr Alependava said the ministry has high expectations for the planned complex.

“This is the hub that will nurture our youth and future leaders,” Dr Alependava said. “It’s a big dream — but if you need to fight for us in the Parliament, $500,000 is not enough.”

The Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, created in 2007, is one of the newest and smallest Government ministries. Officials said the ministry’s budget has been reduced in recent years.
