The Australian High Commission to Solomon Islands His Excellency Andrew Bryne says women’s economic empowerment is one of the great opportunities for human advancement in the 21st century.

Mr Bryne made the comment while delivering his speech this morning at a breakfast hosted by Australian High Commission Office to mark the International Women’s Day.

He says researchers show, economic empowerment of women is critical, saying when women are economically empowered they raised healthier better educated families and their countries become more prosperous.

“Over the last 10 years or so a growing body of international research has shown that economic empowerment of women is critical, not just for individual women but for all communities and countries as well. That research has shown that strengthening the economic role of women in societies is essential for reducing poverty. When women are economically empowered the research show they raise healthier better-educated families and their countries become more prosperous too.”

The Australian High Commission also adds, this year’s theme, “Empowering Women and Girls in Solomon Islands- Making It Happen,” shows that there are many women in Solomon Islands who are making it happen.

“This year’s International Women’s Day theme of “Make It Happen”, there are certainly many strong and capable women in Solomon Islands who are just making it happen and I am honored to see so many of them here in this room with us this morning, but there’s still a great deal to be done not just in Solomon Islands but also in Australia and other countries around the world.”
