FORMER GOVERNOR-GENERAL SIR GEORGE LEPPING PASSED ON

One of the country’s senior statesman, Sir George Lepping has passed on.

The late Lepping was the country’s second Governor General since independence.

Prime Minister Manasseh Damukana Sogavare made the announcement this afternoon.

“The Solomon Islands Government announces with deep sorrow the passing away of the Late Sir George Lepping Grand Cross of St Michael and St George, Knight of the Order of St John, Member of the British Empire this morning at 9.15am Wednesday 24th December 2014 at his residence at upper Rove, Honiara, Solomon Islands. The Late Sir George Lepping was the second Governor-General of Solomon Islands who held the position of Governor-General from 7th July 1988 to 6th July 1994.”

He is survived by his wife, Lady Margaret, 2 sons 4 daughters and several grand children.

Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader, Honourable Jeremiah Manele and members of the Parliamentary Opposition have shared the great loss.

In his condolence message late this evening, a grieved Mr Manele says the parliamentary opposition is saddened to learn of the passing away of a statesman, Sir George Lepping.

He says, the late Sir George was one of the country’s founding fathers and his loss is not only a great loss to his family but this nation as a whole.

The opposition leader adds the late Sir George was a great inspiring leader – our country’s second Governor General.

He assures Lady Margaret Lepping, children, grandchildren and relatives of the Opposition’s thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
