Government House announces restriction on public and media during PM’s election

The Government House has announced restrictions on the public and the media during the election of the Prime Minister at the National Parliament Chamber on Friday, 15th May 2026, at 9:30 am, due to constitutional requirements.

According to a public notice from Government House, this is as required by Schedule 2 of the Constitution, which states that “no person other than the Governor General, a member of Parliament, or a public officer whose assistance is enlisted for the purpose of counting votes and for any other purpose relating to the conduct of the election shall be present at the election meeting”.

There will also be no livestream or live broadcast of the event. However, the public and media can gather outside the Parliament precincts and wait at the eastern entrance of the National Parliament Building for the notification and declaration of the newly elected Prime Minister by the Governor General after the election is concluded.

The newly elected Prime Minister will make brief remarks after the declaration.
