The Honiara City Council has defended its appointment of Don Houkura as Education Director, saying the Council is satisfied with Mr Houkura’s performance.

Mr Houkura is under fire from the National Teachers Union and its Industrial Relations Officer, Samson Faisi who are saying Mr Houkura is over retirement age and should go.

But speaking to SIBC News, Deputy Mayor Eric Tema says Mr Houkura did a lot of policy work and work on the Council’s constitution towards schools and teachers; and this is why the Council is employing him.

“Don Houkura has done a lot of good things for the council and that is why we want to keep him there”.

SIBC News understands the Director of Honiara City Council Education Authority post is a recent initiative to allow Mr. Houkura to complete his unfinished work with the Council.
