HCC says no bus fare increase approved despite rising fuel prices

By Chris Alex/HCC statement

The Honiara City Council (HCC) has confirmed that no increase in bus fares has been approved, despite growing concerns over rising fuel prices.

Speaking to SIBC News, HCC Communications Officer Chrishapert Ha’arabe said the current gazetted fares remain unchanged.

“The gazetted bus fares remain as they are, and there has been no approved increase,” he said.

Under the HCC Ordinance, the standard bus fare within Honiara remains at $3 for adults and $2 for students and children.

The Council has raised concerns that some operators are already charging up to $5, which exceeds the approved rates and is considered unlawful.

Mr Ha’arabe acknowledged that enforcement remains a challenge but said efforts will be strengthened moving forward.

“With the recent increase in fuel prices, we understand the pressure on transport operators. However, any fare adjustment must follow the proper legal process,” he said.

HCC also clarified that fuel pricing is a national issue and confirmed it is open to engaging with the Government to address the impact of rising fuel costs on public transport.

The Council is urging members of the public to report any unlawful fare increases by bus owners, drivers, or conductors to its Law Enforcement Office.

“Public support is important to help us take appropriate action against illegal fare increases,” Mr Ha’arabe added.

Meanwhile, HCC noted that there is currently no specific ordinance regulating taxi fares. However, any proposed increase must still be formally gazetted before it can be enforced.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any violations by contacting the HCC Law Enforcement Office.
