Nishinomiya City in Japan has donated two waste collecting compactors to Honiara City Council.

Two compactors donated by Nishinomiya city of Japan

Both cities share the idea of sustainable community development through environmental learning on 27 July 2022.

In October 2019, Honiara City was declared an Environmental Learning City, to promote sustainable community development through environmental learning.

Nishinomiya city made the same declaration in 2003, which confirms that the two cities will cooperate as Environmental Learning Cities for mutual exchange and mutual solution of environmental issues.

This donation was carried out as part of the efforts of both cities, which share the common idea of an environmental learning city.

To achieve this donation, Kyokuto Kaihatsu Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nishinomiya City), which manufactured the compactors, agreed with the purpose of this project and offered to bear the maritime transportation cost.

In addition, the Learning and Ecological Activities Foundation for Children (LEAF), which develops the JICA grassroots project in Honiara City, bore the domestic procedure costs in Japan. Thus, this donation was realized as a partnership between the public and private sectors.

Honiara city pledges to utilize them to solve the urgent issue of waste and to further promote environmental learning activities, and would like to express its heartfelt gratitude for the cooperation of Nishinomiya citizens and businesses.

Both cities and countries will make further efforts to solve global environmental issues such as climate change facing humankind including measures for waste issues in each region, and they confirm here that they will continue to promote mutual exchange and cooperation in the future.
