The Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, Jeremiah Manele has said land-related matters are common issues our people often suffer their negative impacts.

The Honourable MP for Hograno/Kia/Havulei made the comment when he contributed to the Lands and Titles Amendment Bill 2016 prior to its passage in Parliament.

“Sadly, land matter issues from ownership to leadership are not lessening or reducing; in fact, land disputes as we all know are on the rise and such is a common knowledge in our courts which are clogged with dispute cases and other land-related issues.”

He adds the amendment may be using a foreign concept of land ownership, management, and administration to further protect land that may have been acquired legally.

“Actually, what we are doing is that we continue to use or acquire a foreign concept of land ownership, management, and administration to further protect land that in the beginning, may have been acquired legally or in a matter that does not fall well within our customary ways of dealing with land. I understand this will be a subject of further reforms and policies and legislations that the Government will later bring to Parliament.”

The Bill was passed into an Act late last week.
