A non-Government Organisation ‘OceansWatch Solomon Islands’ working in some parts of Temotu Province is concerned about the lifting of the beche-de-mer ban by the government.

Director of OceanWatch Lawrence Nodua says surveys conducted on Reef Islands found that the sea cucumber is fast declining resulting in dirty seabeds.

Director Nodua warns, unless the marine species is controlled, the government will wake up one day to realise its extinction.

OceansWatch encourages the government to invest in sustainable activities for remote communities and warn against exploiting their resources as a result of a change in government policy.
