Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes off Makira coast

A magnitude 5.9 tremor hit near Kirakira, Makira-Ulawa Province yesterday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The USGS reported the earthquake struck 145 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital around 10:30pm.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warning was in place after the earthquake.

There were no reports of initial damage or injuries.
