MASI partners with BBC Media Action to empower provincial Stringers for election coverage

Sponsored

In partnership with BBC Media Action, the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) has launched a training program for provincial stringers in preparation for the upcoming general elections in April.

This collaborative effort aims to equip stringers from rural areas with essential reporting skills to cover election developments in their respective provinces.

The training program which commenced Thursday in Honiara seeks to address the disparity in media coverage, often centred around the capital city, Honiara.

By engaging stringers from the provinces, MASI aims to ensure more comprehensive and diverse election coverage amplifying the voices of rural
communities.

Participants will receive guidance on ethical reporting practices, fact-checking techniques, interview strategies and digital storytelling tools from experienced
BBC MA’s journalist, Dipak Bhattarai. Stringers came from Temotu, Choiseul, Makira/Ulawa and Savo/Russels.

MASI in collaboration with BBC Media Action is committed to supporting stringers throughout the program and facilitating collaboration with local newsrooms to integrate provincial perspectives into election coverage.

A Stringer can be a freelance journalist, reporter or an individual who contributes news stories, articles or other content to a media organization on a regular or occasional basis.
