The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, MECDM through the Environment and Conservation Division and partners are implementing a national project to clean and rehabilitate the Mataniko River.

A statement from the Ministry states dumping of waste and rubbish into the river has contributed to the pollution of the Mataniko River and its coastal sea front.

The statement adds the project aims to address the problem through awareness and implementation programs on best practices of waste management including the use of waste bins, anti-littering and waste minimization activities such as recycling, composting and the removal of accumulated wastes in the river.
