Poor ground conditions at the Kirakira airstrip in Makira Ulawa Province is causing frequent cancellations of flights to the province, and Premier Thomas Weape says he is concerned for his province’s traveling public.

The Makira-Ulawa Premier says the runway’s poor condition is not a new problem as heavy rains is like the normal weather in Kirakira.

Speaking to SIBC News, Premier Weape said his Government sees the only way to deal with this problem is to tar seal the airport’s runway.

He said the Ministry of Communication and Aviation had first promised to tar seal the runway in 2012, but has not followed up with its promise to today.
