QUICKLY AMEND THE ELECTORAL ACT: SOGAVARE
Member of Parliament for East Choiseul, Manasseh Sogavare says the Electoral Act should be quickly amended to make it illegal to collect voters registration cards.
Mr Sogavare made the statement in Parliament this week, during the debate on the Political Parties Integrity Bill.
He says the new Biometric Voter registration is a very good reform to support the bill, but it is already being abused.
He says the Electoral Act should be amended to make it illegal to collect voter registration cards.
“A quick amendment should now be made to the Electoral Act to make it illegal for people to collect voters’ cards with promises of cash and other benefits. As a matter of fact Mr Speaker if such activities are undertaken during the election period they would be ruled as bribery. It is just unfortunate that the Act is silent on such activities that is clearly vote buying.”
